CHAPTER 1
Introduction
This book concerns the practice of “international commercial arbitration” in Asia. It is primarily addressed to persons who are or would like to be international commercial arbitrators in Asia. But it is also intended to be a handbook for legal practitioners or interested laypersons wishing to know about the practice of international commercial arbitration in Asia. From time to time, it also suggests ways in which that practice can be improved and developed. The term “Asia” denotes certain developed or developing arbitration jurisdictions in Asia, not the whole of Asia, which is far too large a region for any book (let alone a short one such as this) to cover. The Asian arbitration jurisdictions that this book will focus on are those with which I have gained some familiarity, namely, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mainland China, and Japan.
