UK insurers are hoping that working with the Chinese authorities in Hong Kong after next Tuesday's formal handover will be a useful experience for setting up future operations on mainland China, writes Chris Quick.

Paul Swinburn, director of corporate affairs of Eagle Star, which has operations in the territory and has been seeking a licence to trade in China, said he hoped this experience would be useful both to insurers and the Chinese authorities.
