Environmental protection law in China

During 1999 China revised its Marine Environmental Protection Law of 1982. The revisions took effect from 1 April 2000 and while the extent to which they are being enforced is not yet clear, members need to be aware of the changes, as there are many elements of relevance to shipping operations. Shipowners and ship operators may be penalised with heavy fines if they contravene the regulations.
