Fingering illegal entrants

The European Union’s new illegal immigrant and asylum seeker fingerprint database has detected 17,287 illicit multiple asylum applications by refugee status claimants who are supposed to lodge only one application in the EU. The EURODAC system showed 7% made multiple applications. Operational since January 2003, last year EURODAC successfully processed fingerprints of 246,902 asylum seekers and 7,857 illegal immigrants.
