Money Laundering Bulletin
Survival Guides – new and updated
Nowadays we take it for granted, writes
Sue Grossey
, but it was completely revolutionary – and even blasphemous – when Charles Darwin abandoned his theological training to study
nature and in 1859 (coincidentally on the exact day on which I am writing this – 22 November) published his ground-breaking
work ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’. In this book, he put forward the theory of what we now call
“survival of the fittest” – although in scientific terms, “fittest” does not mean what it means to MTV viewers! As Darwin
himself put it so well: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most
responsive to change.” And thank goodness for that, as we in the field of anti-money laundering (AML) are living through a
time of great change – and it is the MLRO who can keep pace with that change and adapt himself and his in-house policies and
procedures to it who will survive and thrive.
