Financial Regulation International
Regulatory review of 2000
With the beginning of a new regulatory year, it is appropriate to reflect on some of the more important recent developments which have occurred in the banking and financial area and to attempt to identify some of the more significant areas of gap, omission or deficiency which persist. Here George Walker examines whether the efforts of the past twelve months will lead to greater harmonisation and more effective regulatory structures.

Despite the substantial amount of progress which was possible last year (for comment on 1999 see
FRR, January 2000
), a number of important difficulties in the area of regulatory policy and practice remain to be resolved. Hopefully, further
success may be possible during the course of this year in, at least, some of the key problem areas which persist.
