Liberty in Puerto Rico

Latin America

Liberty International Underwriters (LIU), a division of of the US based Liberty Mutual Group, has opened an office in Puerto Rico to take advantage of opportunities in the country’s underseved medium to large casualty insurance market. The new office in San Juan is part of LIU’s overall strategy of getting closer to brokers. During 2006, LIU opened offices in Hong Kong, Houston and Los Angeles. The St Juan office will provide brokers with local general liability insurance capacity but will also serve as a direct conduit to LIU’s excess umbrella, environmental coverage and Specialty Casualty financial lines (employment practices liability and directors’ and officers’) capacity and expertise. According to Arlene Rivera, who will head up LIU’s San Juan office, the intention is to underwrite small, medium and large financial lines accounts as well as larger casualty policies. LIU will be one of the very few A rated insurers in the Puerto Rican market, according to David Cohen, chief underwriting officer of LIU’s global casualty operations.
