South East Asia: landslides and floods triggered by torrential rain killed at least 24 people in Indonesia’s eastern city
of Manado. The disaster occurred in the North Sulawesi provincial capital, where parts of the city were inundated with one-metre
high floodwaters after hours of rain. Most of the dead were buried by mud from landslides in hilly parts of the city. Scores
of Malaysians were trapped in their homes after heavy overnight rain triggered flash floods. Rain continued for four hours
and the Damansara river, west of the capital Kuala Lumpur, burst its banks. Rescue officials said up to 400 homes were flooded
and so far 150 people have been evacuated to safer ground.
