The news that Munich Re has been granted the first reinsurance licence by the Chinese authorities, has spurred a number of the German reinsurer’s rivals into action. Swiss Re has stepped up its efforts to obtain a licence. Now Employers’ Re, part of the finance arm of the General Electric Corporation, has also entered the fray. The company is looking for permission to initially operate in Beijing and Shanghai, before extending its presence to Shenzhen.
