HSE fines unenforceable abroad
Two Swedish engineering companies, fined more than £1mn for their part in the Ramsgate walkway collapse in 1994 in which six
people died, have had their fines written off following refusal to pay and going into liquidation. This because health and
safety fines are unenforceable outside the jurisdiction that hands them down.
