‘Elaborate shell game’
American International Group (
AIG) has been joined by
Chubb subsidiary Northwestern Pacific Indemnity in suit against
Cigna and a former subsidiary INA. This arose from the establishment of a separate division to limit losses from pollution and
asbestos claims. Last July,
Cigna sold INA to Bermudian insurer
Ace for US$3.45bn, its policies, including pollution and asbestos, having been transferred into Century Indemnity, itself part
of Brandywine Holdings also acquired by
Ace.
