‘Slow’ worker sacking fair

A Birmingham industrial tribunal found that Ambertex Clothing was entitled to dismiss a ‘slow’ worker as they did not wish to pay her the minimum wage of £3.60 an hour. Gurdev Kaur had been employed for over two hours, on a piece work basis, receiving around £2 per hour for sewing on shirt buttons, but with the introduction of the minimum wage the company set a required level of productivity, which she failed to attain.
