School not a safe place of work

John Gill, head of science for 16 years, progressively suffered headaches, tiredness and appeared incompetent in his work. Although his condition improved during school holidays the real cause – carbon monoxide leaking in the boiler room, immediately below the lab – was not recognised. Although the level of exposure was low, the build-up over a long period, has left him brain damaged and needing constant assistance.
