Tobacco update

First tobacco company to target insurers, Liggett filed in Delaware on 4 February 2000, seeking to prove that policies taken out as early as the 1940s cover liability and personal injury claims from the smoking of cigarettes. Part of the Brook Group, Liggett is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars from around 30 insurers, which include American Mutual Corp. Insurers deny coverage or liability.
