Liability Risk and Insurance
Profits up, shares down
Late and non-reported claims in the London general liability subscription market, from which Independent Insurance commenced
withdrawal in 1997, leads to a £20.3mn charge along with reinsurance ring fencing of exposures up to and including 1997. On
announcement, and despite a rise of annual operating profit of 25% to £61.5mn, first market reaction was a 17% fall in share
price.
