The role of OEMs and classification societies in carbon reduction

The maritime industry is under sustained and increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. Shipowners are now expected to demonstrate not only intent but also measurable progress, supported by precise, defensible data. This pressure does not come from a single source. It comes simultaneously from regulators tightening environmental expectations, charterers and financiers seeking evidence of responsible operations and customers asking what practical steps are being taken today to reduce emissions. Against this backdrop, owners must show real-world improvements in vessel efficiency, rather than relying on long-term commitments or future technology promises.
