Social media addiction trials threaten wider liability exposures Litigation related to social media addiction is under way in the US that could have a significant impact on liability insurers, with some analysts even comparing the potential for claims and coverage disputes to the mayhem caused in the past two decades by the opioid crisis. At stake is whether addiction to social media content has caused physical and mental health harm to users, in particular children, and whether companies such as Meta, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube programmed their algorithms to get users hooked on their platforms.
