Lithium-ion fires demand a new maritime playbook

Simon Hodgkinson, of West P&I, calls for the industry to work together to reduce the risk of lithium-related fires on board

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have become indispensable to modern life. They power electric vehicles (EVs), consumer electronics and, increasingly, ships themselves. Their appeal is clear: high energy density, rapid charging, relatively low cost, and zero emissions during use. As a result, global demand is surging. The International Energy Agency reported that electric car sales rose by 25 per cent to 17 million units in 2024, pushing global battery demand beyond 1 terawatt-hour (TWh). McKinsey Battery Insights believes demand could reach around 4.7 TWh by 2030.
