UK infringed human rights convention
Non-pecuniary damages of €22,900 and €7,500 in respect of costs and expenses were awarded to the children and mother of a
heroin addict who died after suffering withdrawal symptoms while in prison. The woman, an asthmatic, died in hospital. The
family alleged that she suffered inhuman and degrading treatment in prison, but there was no effective remedy to pursue the
complaint.
