Addressing the escalation in spoofing with data fusion

As navigation satellite system jamming and spoofing becomes more frequent, particularly in high-risk regions, vessels must be equipped with systems that can maintain accurate positioning even when satellite signals are compromised, explains Freddy Saunders, at Plextek

The news that another vessel has run aground due to a suspected GNSS jamming incident has further underlined the threats facing shipping globally. The container vessel MSC Antonia ran aground around 100 nm off the coast of Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia on 10 May, an event now confirmed to be the result of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) spoofing by hostile actors, which manipulated navigation data and misled the crew.
