When the Maritime Labour Convention's latest amendments came into force in December 2024, requiring "regular and reliable" internet access for seafarers, many in the industry saw an opportunity to improve life at sea for seafarers. For HR and crewing departments under pressure to attract and retain skilled personnel, digital connectivity is essential. According to various seafarer happiness indices, crew sentiment continues to decline, with poor internet access among the top concerns across all ranks. Increasingly, crew welfare is not just a moral imperative: it is a core element of operational resilience and access to fast internet is essential to this.
