The race to find a sustainable but practical fuel continues

Professor Pietro Tricoli, of the University of Birmingham, outlines a recent development in terms of decarbonisation of fuel solutions for the maritime sector

Maritime transport has changing significantly in the last few years and there is a much stronger focus on problems of sustainability and efficient use of energy resources. The recent introduction of the EU's Emissions Trading System covering CO2 emissions from vessel larger than 5,000 gt entering EU ports will incentivise the adoption of low-carbon solutions to reduce emissions. The ALL-DC-SHIPS project underpins this change by introducing a more efficient power distribution system that uses DC electricity for both the primary and secondary networks of vessels.
