Tobacco industry sued for US$289bn

The US Justice Department has revealed that its lawsuit against the tobacco industry for the alleged fraudulent marketing of cigarettes aims to recover US$289bn. The companies involved, Philip Morris, Brown & Williamson, Lorillard, RJ Reynolds Tobacco and the Liggett unit of the Vector Group, have said that they will file a joint motion for the dismissal of a lawsuit.
