BSE breakthrough test

State television in Italy has reported that Italian researchers are developing a test to detect BSE in live animals which could speed up the diagnosis and avoid the mass slaughter of cattle. The test involves taking a sample of nasal mucus, rather than the current method of testing which involves either an autopsy or surgical removal of tissue from the brain.
