Limitation of shipowner's liability

14.1 Introduction

One of the fundamental principles in maritime law is limiting the shipowner's liability in case of damage caused by a ship. Shipowners are liable up to a specific limit, and the victims must accept all damage beyond that limit as a price that has to be paid by those who depend on shipping for their business.
