CHAPTER 9

Management agreements and FLNG

Authored by John Simpson

A Introduction

9.1 Ship management involves outsourcing the management of a ship to a ship manager who has the necessary qualifications and experience to offer the required services. With floating LNG, this will often be carried out as part of a bespoke Operation and Maintenance (O&M) agreement, many of the terms of which effectively fall under the charter. Most of the matters relating to bespoke O&M agreements for FLNG vessels and FSRUs therefore fall within the respective chapters on those types of charter (see Chapters 3 and 4). However, there will be situations where an amended BIMCO SHIPMAN 98, 2009 or 2024 contract may be used, particularly regarding the management of LNG carriers, which may include FSRUs. It is that context to which this chapter applies. The services offered are likely to involve crew management, full technical management and/or commercial management services. We also consider some of the bespoke ship management clauses which may appear (to the extent that these are not considered in other chapters).
