The evolution of ship management: AUTOSHIPMAN 2024

The maritime industry is undergoing a technological transformation with the rise of maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS). As automation and remote operation become increasingly viable, traditional ship management frameworks, such as BIMCO's SHIPMAN, face new challenges. In response, AUTOSHIPMAN has been developed to address the complexities of managing autonomous vessels, including liability, regulatory compliance and cyber security concerns.

Historically, owners managed all aspects of a vessel's operations, including manning, commercial management and technical oversight. This was largely due to the fact that most owners were also mariners themselves. Otherwise, the management of the ship was entrusted to the master, as the owner's agent.
