Flaminia settled

The case of container ship MSC Flaminia has ended in a US$290 million settlement, nearly 12 years after the incident occurred. A fire broke out in a cargo hold while the vessel was crossing the Atlantic Ocean. While the crew was trying to put out the fire there was an explosion. Three crew members died as a result of the incident, with 20 crew being rescued. There were about 6,500 teu onboard at the time. Stolt had 29 tank containers onboard the ship, three of which were stowed in the cargo hold. It was alleged that these tank containers were the cause of the fire and that Stolt did not adequately warn of the inherently dangerous nature of the cargo.
