Higher waves, higher risks of container stack collapses

The global volume of containerised trade is growing at the same time as extreme weather events and rising wave heights are increasing the risk of stack collapse and loss of containers at sea, as Kunal Pathak, Siddharth Mahajan, Are Solum and Helge Nordahl, of Gard, report

In 2023 the global container shipping fleet grew nearly 4 per cent, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. In Gard's own P&I portfolio, this segment has increased by around 16 per cent in the past five years, currently accounting for 18 per cent of insured vessels.
