Keeping a hand on the tiller: the Poseidon Principles for Marine Insurance

The Poseidon Principles for Marine Insurance have brought about both enthusiasm, debate and a certain degree of scepticism. So why should more insurers be part of the initiative? Neil Henderson, of Gard (UK), reports

The Poseidon Principles for Marine Insurance (PPMI) were formally launched in December 2021 and follow the equivalent Poseidon Principles for Financial Institutions (PPFI) launched 18 months earlier. The objective is for hull and machinery (H&M) insurers to obtain data about the carbon efficiency of their respective portfolios and to publicly disclose their portfolios' overall climate alignment.
