European court rules on night flights

Compensation to local residents for disturbance suffered from night flights could cost between £400mn and £2bn (according to decibel level set as threshold) following a ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in Hatton v United Kingdom. Holding that loss of sleep violated their rights to ‘respect for private and family life’, eight Londoners (part of the HACAN Clearskies action group) were each awarded £4,000 in October.
