JICA's perspectives on the use of FIDIC contracts

Dr Donald Charrett practises in construction law as an arbitrator, mediator, dispute board member and expert. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he worked as a consulting engineer for over 30 years. He has published widely on legal and engineering subjects, including as the author/joint author/editor of five books on construction law.

5.1 JICA's development objectives

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), an incorporated administrative agency in charge of administering Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), is one of the world’s largest bilateral aid agencies supporting socioeconomic development in developing countries in different regions of the world. In accordance with Japan’s Development Cooperation Charter (2015), JICA set out its mission in 2017 as ‘to achieve Human Security and Quality Growth’ and support the resolution of issues in developing countries through a flexible combination of various assistance methods, such as technical cooperation, finance and investment cooperation, and grants. It operates in approximately150 countries and regions of the world. Japan’s ODA is illustrated in Figure 5.1.
