Introduction
The insurance implications of damage to the marine environment are naturally the concern, first and foremost, of those who provide cover against the legal liabilities resulting from it. Although there are various ways in which pollution may affect rights under hull and cargo policies,1 these do not normally provide cover against pollution liability risks. These risks are borne primarily by the owner of the ship concerned, who will normally insure against them, along with other marine liability risks, by separate liability cover.
