The sinking of Titanic

The UK Club takes a look back at one of the most notorious incidents in maritime history, the sinking of Titanic. This disaster provides the opportunity to examine the reported facts, to reflect and understand human error and avoid those mistakes from being repeated, as Captain Hiroshi Sekine, of the UK P&I Club, reports

On 10 April 1912 the passenger liner Titanic departed from Southampton for New York on its maiden voyage. At 23.40 on 14 April the ship collided with an iceberg and sank two hours and 40 minutes later. More than 1,500 of the approximately 2,200 passengers and crew died, making this the worst maritime accident in the world at the time. This tragedy resulted in numerous international rules, conventions and other measures and had an enormous effect on shipping companies worldwide.
