Liability Risk and Insurance
New code for general insurance
On 1 January 2001 a new code for claims handling in general insurance came into force. Launched by the Association of British
Insurers (ABI), the code sets minimum standards for claims settlement and management, including deadlines for responding to
claims or complaints, and for settlement payments. While compliance is voluntary, it is likely that the more than 90% of general
insurers that are current members of the ABI will comply, if only because noncompliance could strengthen customers’ appeal
to the Ombudsman.
