US pollution settlements

Over the last few weeks a number of costly pollution claims have been settled in the US. Cinergy Corp has agreed a US$1.4bn settlement, the largest under the Clean Air Act, without accepting liability for pollution from coal-burning power plants. Of this, US$8.5mn is a fine, but the bulk of the settlement will be used to make environmental improvements at the plants.
