£750,000 for virus from defective blood

A man who contracted a virus during an operation at a private hospital has been awarded £750,000. He contracted Lymphotophic Virus Type 1 (HTLV-1) after he was given a blood transfusion during surgery for pancreatitis. The National Blood Service (NBS) admitted providing defective blood.The man now has HTLV-associated myelopathy, a rare disease which affects the central nervous system. The award was made after seven years of legal action.
