Call for stricter regulation of e-cigarettes
The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) has expressed concern at the rise in prevalence of youth vaping and has
called for the strict regulation of e-cigarettes. “There is a growing body of research that shows that e-cigarettes are unhealthy
products designed to be addictive and facilitate first-time tobacco smoking,” said UICC, noting that the e-cigarette market
is growing at a rapid pace, with a current global worth estimated at nearly US$20 billion, up from under US$7 billion just
five years ago. There is also a documented rise in e-cigarette use among youth populations (from 1.5 per cent in 2011 to 11.7
per cent in 2018 in the US) said UICC.
