Expected shipping trends for 2020 from a P&I perspective

Miguel Caballero, at West of England Insurance Services (Luxembourg) SA, sets out his thoughts on three issues which are likely to be on Clubs’ radar screens in 2020, the implementation of the IMO’s 0.5 per cent global sulphur cap, the potential for further sanctions and the withdrawal of the UK from the EU

The IMO’s 0.5 per cent sulphur cap is, as of 1 January, fully in force and all vessels are now required to either burn low-sulphur fuel as bunkers, use alternative fuels, or fit scrubbers to exhaust systems when using fuels with a higher sulphur content in order with MARPOL regulations.
