The importance of training for lifeboat safety
Stuart Edmonston, of the UK P&I Club, warns that a lack of practice is seriously adding to the risks associated with seafarers using lifeboats
The adage at sea that “your ship is your best lifeboat” seems to be held true by seafarers, as many now consider the lifeboat
to be the most dangerous part of the ship. Accidents involving survival craft are one of the largest causes of injuries and
fatalities at sea. A 2001 study by the UK government found, through a 10-year proceeding period, 16 per cent of all lives
lost on merchant ships were ascribed to lifeboat systems and a further 87 people had been injured. Despite numerous regulatory
changes, accidents continue to occur, with two high-profile accidents taking place in 2016.
