Football corruption trial begins in New York
The trial of three former high-flying football executives kicked off in New York on 13 November. The former president of the
Brazil Football Association (CBF) José Maria Marin; former Paraguayan president of the South America football confederation
(CONMEBOL) Juan Ángel Napout; and former president of the Peruvian Football Association (FPF) Manuel Burga are all charged
with racketeering and bribery over television rights to the Copa América and Copa Libertadores football tournaments. All three
deny the charges linked to the global scandal involving football’s world governing body, FIFA and face up to 20 years in prison
if found guilty.
