FinTech: the next frontier

FinTech (short for “financial technology”) is everywhere these days, catching the attention of the UK’s top policymakers. In a September 2017 speech at the Bank of England, Prime Minister Theresa May described the UK as “the global hub of fintech”. [1] Even as FinTech has emerged as the UK’s darling industry, the financial crime risks have remained only generically examined, says David Carlisle. Several recent studies, though, have brought greater clarity to the money laundering risk picture surrounding the FinTech sector, and speak to the implications for compliance professionals.
