The drive for increased efficiency and greater cost control in a market still affected by the worst economic downturn in a generation has thrown the spotlight on the important role being played by third-party ship managers in this digital age. Ship managers continue to be judged and benchmarked on their operational performance and, in many cases, are rewarded accordingly as optimised operation is important for those shipowners wishing to be the preferred carrier of charterers’ cargo. But the age of smart shipping and all the efficiencies that it brings means that today’s managers are increasingly ahead of the curve when it comes to running their fleets.
