The impact of shipping on the environment


Jacqueline Tan, of the UK P&I Club, warns of the difficulties of translating regulation into practice


For some time now, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been working to reduce the harmful impacts of shipping on the environment. For example, it has introduced measures such as Annex VI to regulate the prevention of air pollution from ships, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention) and, within this, Regulation 14 which focuses on the emission of sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter from ships.
