NHS resolution annual report highlights increasing claims costs

The first annual report of NHS Resolution (the new operating name of the NHS Litigation Authority) has highlighted the increasing
cost of clinical negligence claims. Figures for the past year show that the NHS paid out more than £1.08 billion in damages
to claimants in 2016/2017. This represents an increase of £132 million (14 per cent) from the previous year. This is despite
a fall in the number of new clinical negligence claims of 2.5 per cent to 10,686, said the report and is in part due to the
fact some of the payments represent claims made in previous years.
