Hospital mortality rates in England
The annual Dr Foster Hospital Guide has produced data which establish a link between the number of doctors on wards and the
standard of care. It appears that NHS trusts would be advised to ensure consultants are present in hospitals seven days a
week. These findings support the recommendation of the Royal College of Physicians in 2010 that any hospital admitting acutely
ill patients should have a consultant physician on-site for at least 12 hours per day, seven days a week.
