Remote paradise: beauty and the beasts
Fergus Draper, of Skuld London, looks at the changing challenges of insuring the new generation of super yachts
A new generation
Evolution in the yachting industry in recent years has seen progression away from typical cruising yachts towards the expedition
series. It may be a move to the future, or a return to the past. Sailing was once for the adventurous and it seems the ultimate
toy is now helping a new generation of adventurers see the world from the comfort of the planet’s leading mega yachts. With
more demand than ever for bigger yachts with more complex equipment, few corners of the globe remain inaccessible. We have
seen the 107.4 m Ulysses, and later its 116 m sister, appear from the Norwegian shipyard Kleven, previously reserved for the
offshore industry. With a range of 8,500 nm and fully ice classed, Ulysses has the ability to reach even the most remote of
locations.
