Battling cyber crime in ports and at sea

Peregrine Storrs-Fox, of the TT Club, provides an overview of the cyber-crime risks in the shipping industry

Cyber risks are continuing to climb the agenda for corporations and businesses, and the shipping industry is no different. According to the Allianz “Safety and Shipping Review 2016”, the potential risk of pirates using cyber crime to target shipping vessels is increasing. Pirates no longer need to wait in the vast ocean before making their attack; they can simply gain access to a ship’s IT system to get all the information they need, including its route, cargo and sailing time.
