Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly
BOOK REVIEW - “FALCONER’S MARINE DICTIONARY”
Published by David & Charles. £9.50.
With the increasing popularity of reprints of earlier works it is interesting to note that the field of shipping has not been overlooked. “Falconer’s Marine Dictionary”, first published in 1780, is clearly of no practical value today, but should prove fascinating to the naval historian and anyone with an interest in the historical aspects of ships, seamanship and the shipping industry.
As well as providing an early equivalent of “From Truck to Keel” the dictionary defines, in rather primitive terms, more commercial concepts such as “charter-party”, “bill of lading”, “freight” and “demurrage”. The original work is reproduced with painstaking accuracy and is illustrated with several line drawings and plans.
