Safety at sea – is it part of your team culture?

Safety starts with changing behaviour, as the Swedish Club discussed as part of its annual insurance event. Felicity Landon reports

Change attitudes and you change behaviour, Martin Hernqvist, director of The Swedish Club Academy stressed. He has no doubt that the maritime resource management (MRM) programme run by the Academy is an essential part of the shipping industry’s drive towards greater safety at sea. The programme is also considered the “jewel in the crown” for the P&I Club which prides itself in taking the lead when it comes to improving safety. As Marina Samsjö, marketing communications manager at The Swedish Club, pointed out: “You need to remember that as a P&I Club we are very much at the sharp end of an incident and are often involved in sorting out the practicalities of a situation both in the early days of any incident as well as in the long term. We see what’s actually going on at sea, and are absolutely committed to making it a safer place to work and to operate in.”
